Mediation: how can it help me?

In a nutshell, mediation is the process in which parties work with a neutral facilitator to isolate an issue, develop options and consider alternatives to best accommodate their needs.

The mediator’s role is not as a decision maker but to assist the parties in the negotiation so they can reach the agreement themselves. There are very few disputes that cannot be mediated and using this process can avoid the time-consuming and costly process of litigation.

What can be mediated?

  • Civil disputes

  • Family issues: child custody and access arrangements, relationship property and similar disputes
  • Business plans – where parties appear to be heading in different directions
  • Neighbourhood and community issues
